Big Ben, the great clock of Westminster Palace and House Of Parliament, was designed by August Pugin, and took over 40 years to build. The name Big Ben refers not to the clock itself, but to the 13 ton bell hung withing the tower. It was named after the first Commissioner of Works, Sir Benjamin Hall.
